Madera, California
Tutoring in Madera, pre-K through twelfth grade. Every student starts with a test, so we know exactly what to work on.
I'm Ashley. I've been tutoring here since 2018, out of a classroom at my house and online. I take students in whatever they're working on, and reading and phonics is where I started and what most families know me for.
How it works
Here's how I work with a new student.
-
01
Assess
Before we start anything, I test your child. That shows me where the real gap is, and it isn't always where everyone expects it to be.
-
02
Plan
You get the results of that test. From there I write out what we're working on and what order we'll do it in, and I teach from that rather than deciding week to week. I update it as your child improves.
-
03
Teach
We meet each week and work through the plan. Some weeks that means letter sounds and a lot of practice, and some weeks it means the math your child got stuck on. I keep notes on what's working and adjust as we go.
-
04
Coordinate
I email your child's teacher so I know what the school is already working on. If there's an IEP, I read it, line my own testing up with what it measures so the two can be compared, and check with the teachers that the accommodations on paper are the ones your child is actually getting. When the goals come up for review I have current progress data to show. Either way you're not the one carrying messages back and forth.
The difference
How this is different from most tutoring.
Before the first session
Most tutoringStarts right in on whatever homework you brought.
What I doYour child takes a test first, so I can see where they need help.
What the hour runs on
Most tutoringWhatever assignment happens to be due that week.
What I doA written plan built from the test results, and you get those results.
How the room runs
Most tutoringOne student at a time.
What I doMost students work in a small group, and a few have one on one time. Which one suits your child is worth talking through on the call.
The week after
Most tutoringStarts fresh with whatever is due next.
What I doPicks up where we left off, because I keep notes after every session.
Your child's teacher
Most tutoringUsually never hears from the tutor at all.
What I doI email the teacher so we are all on the same page.
If there's an IEP
Most tutoringNot something the tutor is part of.
What I doI read it, match my testing to what it measures, and bring progress data to the meetings.
Every grade
I take students from pre-K through twelfth grade.
A five-year-old learning letter sounds and a senior with an IEP need very different hours from me. What stays the same is that both of them get tested first, and both of them have a plan written down.

Those are just examples to show the range. I work with students at every point along it.
What I do
I work across subjects and grades.
- Subjects and grades
- I take students from pre-K through twelfth grade, in whatever they walk in working on. What that is changes from one year to the next, so tell me the subject when you call and I'll tell you straight whether it's one I take.
- Reading and phonics
- Letter sounds, blending, spelling, fluency, and comprehension. This is what I've spent eight years on and what I do best.
- IEP support
- I read through the IEP, line my testing up with what it measures, and check with the teachers that the accommodations listed are the ones your child is getting. When the goals come up for review I have progress data to show.
- In person or online
- A classroom here in Madera that I use for nothing else, or a video call if the drive doesn't work for you.
If you aren't sure whether I cover what your child needs, that's the quickest thing to settle on the phone. Call and tell me the subject.
Summer
Summer is the biggest part of my year.
It's when I have the most room and the most to offer, and it's usually the easiest time to start with me.
The summer program runs wider than the school year does. It's open to families who are new to me and to the students I already see through the year, and a lot of families use it to get ahead of something before September rather than chase it afterwards.
What I run changes from one summer to the next depending on who I have. Call in the spring and I'll tell you what this one looks like.
I also tutor over winter break, though that stretch is a short one.
Families
These are from families I've worked with.
It was amazing to see my older son gain so much confidence in the classroom after working with Miss Ashley for a short period of time.
My son is currently in High School and has an IEP. As a busy mom I was very overwhelmed. I am extremely grateful to have an amazing tutor like Ashley because she has lifted a weight off my shoulders.
She takes the time to figure out the root of the struggle and builds from there, which has made such a difference in our daughter's confidence and understanding.
Give me a call and tell me about your child.
You'll reach me directly when you call. Tell me what grade your child is in and what you're seeing at home, and I'll let you know if I have an opening and whether I think I can help. It only takes a few minutes and there's no pressure.
